OUTSIDE/IN

Six days of FREE performances and events between January and March

Outside/In is a free celebration of arts and culture taking place over six days featuring six regions of Canada.  

“IN” performances at the Anvil Theatre feature nationally-renowned performing artists from different parts of Canada

“OUTSIDE” is an outdoor street festival from 2-5 on performance days in Hyack Square, featuring local artisans, musicians and more!

 

Everyone is invited to come in to experience exceptional live performing arts or go outside to connect with community and friends you haven’t met yet.

 

 

The series is made possible from a grant from the Department of Canada Heritage (Celebration and Commemoration Program).

Bringing together musicians from Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Africa, the U.K. and Canada, the BC World Music Collective takes you on a worldwide listening journey without leaving your seat! Adonis Puentes, Celso Machado, Tonye Aganaba, Kurai Blessing, JP Carter, Locarno (Tom Landa, Pedro Mota, Robin Layne, Liam MacDonald, Nick La Riviere, Kalissa Landa, JeanSe LeDoujet) and First Nations (St?:lo/ St’át’imc/Nlaka’pamux Territories) rapper, Ostwelve weave their own musical traditions together to create a high-energy, truly global music experience.

A double bill with

New Dance Horizons and Farhad & Daniel

(Prairies)

New Dance Horizons (NDH) is a Regina-based dance company and presenter, nationally recognized as a champion of creative dance. They will present RE-Tangled, with dancers Anastasia Evsigneeva and Anna Protsiou, and Flowers, ode to the beginnings and ending of life.

 

Set 2: Farhad & Daniel

The second half of this Prairie double-bill gives the audience the opportunity to hear the evocative sound of this ancient Persian instrument, the santur, performed in a contemporary style that traverses time. Farhad Khosravi’s santur weaves naturally with the earthy sounds of Daniel Stadnicki’s percussion, creating a seamless musical journey.

Morgan Toney 

(East Coast)   

Mi'kmaq fiddler and singer Morgan Toney brings together the fiery fiddling of Cape Breton Island with the old songs of the Mi’kmaq People with brilliance and heart. This concert features Toney (fiddle/lead vocals), Keith Mullins (guitar/vocals/foot percussion), Colin Grant (fiddle), Boyd MacNeil (bazouki/banjo),  Aaron Prosper (dancer/vocals) and Sarah Prosper (dancer/vocals).

New North Collective

(Northern Canada)     

The New North Collective (NNC) is an ensemble of performing artists from the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Their music is a message from the north – at once both contemporary and traditional, engaging and thought-provoking. Featured: singer/songwriter Diyet from the Kluane First Nation, Nunavut’s Sylvia Cloutier (throat singer/drum dancer), Carmen Braden from Yellowknife (piano, vocals), Graeme Peters (guitar, vocals), Bob Hamilton (steel pedal guitar, mandolin), Selena Savage from Yukon (trombone) and North Vancouver’s Eric Redd (guitar, bass, mandolin).

OKAN

Taking their name from the word for heart in the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria, the women-led ensemble, OKAN, fuses Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration, courage, and love.
