Sahabhava, a Sanskrit word for coexistence, community, and coming together, is a festival that boasts a diverse array of classical music and dance traditions from the Indian subcontinent - brought alive here in Vancouver! Originally a virtual festival which was one of the first Indian classical music and dance events to occur globally during COVID-19, ICMSV continues the concept live with the same intention - to support artists in our community and experience a breadth of artistic disciplines.
This year's Sahabhava will unfold with a Kathak dance recital by Palak Dhiman, followed by an exploration of Khayal and Thumri by north Indian classical vocalist Shoumi Roy along with Hriday Buddhdev (Tabla) and Akhil Jobanputra (Harmonium). The second half commences with a Katha-Kirtana (devotional storytelling) recital by south Indian classical vocalist Sharvari Somayaji along with Shriram Rajagopalan (Violin), and Keerthy Raghavan (Mridangam). To conclude, Dwaipayan Ray on Sarod will present a medley of ragas with Hriday Buddhdev on Tabla.
The Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV) seeks to enhance the ecosystem for Indian classical performing arts in Metro Vancouver. It was founded in 2009 by Akhil Jobanputra at the age of twelve, and later incorporated as a non-profit in 2017. Since its incorporation, ICMSV has hosted numerous live and virtual concerts, conferences, lectures, festivals, and workshops with both international and local artists.
The organization has collaborated with other esteemed institutions such as Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, UBC Centre for India and South Asia Research, and Surrey Civic Theatres. In 2020, ICMSV launched its education branch, Kalavani Institute, which offers an interdisciplinary approach to Indian classical performing arts pedagogy.
